About Skye & Lochalsh Orchestra
SLO is an amateur orchestra, with members coming mainly from the Isle of Skye and Lochalsh which covers an area of about 1000 sq. miles, and has a population of about 13,000.
Rehearsals are on Saturday mornings during the spring and autumn term times, and vary from weekly to fortnightly. These are normally held in Broadford Hall, as it is the most central location.
There are two concerts a year – one in the spring and one just before Christmas – and these are generally held at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig (Sleat) or Broadford Hall.
Membership of the orchestra is open to anyone who can play an orchestral instrument from grade 4 and above, and new members are welcome. (Difficult parts can usually be edited to suit players, if necessary.) Membership costs £15 per term (£5.00 for under 18s).
The Skye & Lochalsh Schools’ Orchestra – currently in hiatus due to maternity leave – draws members from the area’s primary and secondary schools, and some of these talented young players also play in the main orchestra.
