COME AND PLAY!
Our 2026 Open Day will take place on
Saturday 24 October
Following the success of last year’s event we are delighted to be running another Open Day this year.
The Open Day is for anyone who can read music, has their own instrument and would like to see what it’s like to play with a small friendly orchestra and a very patient conductor. You might be learning an instrument, or have learnt to play in the past. Everyone is welcome!
The event takes places at St Columba’s Church, Portree. On the programme for this year:
- Prokofiev – ‘Dance of the Knights’ from the Romeo & Juliet Suite
- Sibelius – Finlandia
- Beethoven – Symphony No. 5, 1st and/or 4th movements
It’s free to take part and refreshments / snack lunch will be provided by orchestra members. We welcome all instruments but do please let us know in advance so that we can organise enough parts (and refreshments!).
For more information or to register your interest please contact us at enquiries@slo-skye.org.uk or call SLO Secretary Jo Headley on 07532 328387.
Meanwhile here’s some more information about what to expect.
Timetable for the day: We will start at 10.30am, setting up stands and music, and having a cup of tea or coffee. The music-making starts at 11am, with a break around 12.30pm for a light lunch. At about 2.30pm we will have a short break, then play through what we have learnt, as if we were giving a concert. Your friends and family are very welcome to come along and listen.
The music: We will be printing out the music, but can also email you the parts before the day, if you want to try it out beforehand. If you have concerns that the music is too difficult, do let us know, as we may be able to simplify it. If you have a music stand, please bring it along, but don’t worry if you haven’t.
The venue: St Columba’s Church has about 8-10 parking spaces, which will be reserved for those with heavy instruments or mobility issues. Please let us know if you need one of these spaces. There is free parking further down the road at the Community Hall. If you’re able to car share, that would be great!
Refreshments: As we are providing lunch, please let us know if you have any allergies or dietary requirements. The earlier we know, the easier it will be for us to cater for you.
