ABOUT THE ORCHESTRA

SLO is an amateur orchestra, the members of which come mainly from the Isle of Skye and Lochalsh. Thus it serves a area of about 1000 sq. miles, with a population of about 13,000.

Rehearsals are on Saturday mornings in spring and autumn term time — varying from weekly to fortnightly — and are normally held in Broadford Hall, as it is the most central location. There are two concerts a year, in the spring and just before Christmas, usually in Sabhal Mòr Ostaig (Sleat) or Broadford Hall.

Membership of the orchestra is open to anyone who can play an orchestral instrument from grade 4 and above and new members are welcome.. (Difficult parts can usually be edited to suit the player, if necessary.) Membership costs £15 per term (£5.00 for under 18s).

There was also the Skye & Lochalsh Schools' Orchestra the members of which were drawn from the area's primary and secondary schools, and some of these talented young players also play in the main orchestra.
